Artist at Home: Silvia Calmejane

from June 15, 2022

Twenty years ago, after several years spent in Paris, the versatile artist Silvia Calmejane returned with her family to her native Basque country. In Saint-Jean-de-Luz she found everything she had missed during her stay in the capital: the mountains, the ocean, the vegetation. It is in the midst of this rich nature that she draws her inspiration for her paintings with their extraordinary colors and multiple techniques. Her studio is adjacent to her house, typical of the region, and offers her the opportunity to enjoy the light of her luxuriant garden populated by palm trees, cacti, roses, wisteria, and hydrangeas. From the city, the artist has kept the memory of art brut, the flow of advertising messages, and the rough aspect of life. From the countryside, she reproduces its more flowery, sunny, and soothing aspects. In each of her compositions, Silvia gives us traces of her history, her travels, and her daily life, which she spreads with her paintbrush. Ongi etorri!
