Artist focus: Silvia Calmejane

Artist focus: Silvia Calmejane

from November 20, 2019

Women dancing freely in the wilderness, urban jungles full of positive messages: these are the two main inspirations of Silvia Calmejane, an outstanding artist, who fascinated us from the moment we met eight years ago. Today, we brush a portrait of this joyful painter, in an interview that outlines Silvia's journey, from her former advertising career to the international success she experiences today.

Silvia describes herself as a great observer, everything around her is important in her creative process. Since childhood, she has been painting faces and wondering what a face can hide behind the mask. The artist does not really have an established process - a piece of poster, depending on its shape and colour, can trigger the dynamic. She has abandoned canvas in favour of wood, which corresponds better to her and on which collage and colour emerge more instinctively. Plexiglass allowed her to use mirror writing and to paint with her left hand, with a more liberated stroke. She also likes to mix tools: paint, greasy pastels, felts, paper. When she creates, it is in the urgency to reproduce as best as possible the image she has in mind, before it escapes.

Through her work she wishes to spread messages of tolerance and peace: "On my own humble level, I would like to convey the vision of a free world, in which people are united, at peace with each other and with the planet. Reveal the beauty of nature that nourishes us on all levels. To awaken our individual responsibility to participate in a collective consciousness. Share positive messages to simply spread good."

Artist focus: Jeff Robb

Artist focus: Jeff Robb

from October 20, 2019

Master in the art of three-dimensional holography, British artist Jeff Robb totally seduced us with his technique and the aestheticism of his female nudes. Leaving no one insensitive, they have also seduced great museums such as the Victoria & Albert Museum in London or the Getty Museum in Los Angeles. For the past thirty years, Robb has been experimenting with lenticular technology and has started working on projects combining sound and kinetic installations on a large scale.

Jeff Robb is continually inspired by the nude female form: the countless permutations of bodies and their composition, facial expressions and light, are both a technical challenge and a fascinating problem to solve. He is also inspired by the medium with which he works: lenticular photography. It is a complicated and expensive process, but it is a process that captures the subjects in a strange and wonderful mixture of photography and sculpture. How does it work? It is a process that consists in taking many different photographs of the subject, from different angles. Then, they are digitally processed with a technique called interlacing, printed out and laminated.

For Jeff Robb, it is a matter of putting us in a state between perception and reality: "I believe it is important that our minds experience this period of suspension, especially when we in the Western world generally live in a spiritual void. We need magical inspiration in our lives and I would like to share this feeling in my work."

New artist: Jeff Robb

from October 3, 2019

It is with great pride that we welcome Jeff Robb and his hypnotic photography in the Envie d'Art artist family. The British artist's lenticular pictures - which have been shown at the Victoria & Albert Museum in London or the Getty in LA - defy the laws of physics as well as they celebrate the aesthetics of the female nude, and the possibilities of the human body.

Artist focus: Nicolas Dubreuille

Artist focus: Nicolas Dubreuille

September 15, 2019

It was at an art market 5 years ago that we fell in love with Nicolas Dubreuille's works. Since then, we have accompanied him in his work, witnessing a constant evolution in his style. Coming from the world of graphic design, the artist lives in the South-West of France and multiplies mediums - combining drawing, sculpture, photography and painting - allowing him to explore form and colour more freely. After two catalogues and numerous orders, we are pleased to introduce you to this popular artist.

Nicolas Dubreuille draws his inspiration from modernist and abstract art everywhere: sculptors Eduardo Chillida and Philippe Hiquily, or painters such as Kandinsky or Paul Jenkins (in particular his work on transparency and the contrast he manages to obtain with colours). The artist started working with geometric shapes and then evolved towards transparency and gradually his work became more complex in the superposition of colours. "For my sculptures, I use a kind of alphabet of shapes, and I try to find a balance between all the pieces. A link between painting and sculpture is, in my opinion, the art of finding the right balance."

Nicolas likes to focus on details that allow him to let his imagination run wild and for him, movement is an escape from reality: "That's what I'm trying to share."

Discovered by our gallery 7 years ago, Cécile Plaisance is a feminist photographer who places women at the heart of her artistic work. Thanks to a particular work of images using a lenticular print, our artist stages the famous Barbie and then models while having fun with their feminity and maintains her provocative and free side. Cécile Plaisance continues her international career and has enjoyed immense success in France and abroad.
